About Me: Still trying to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Still speaking truth to power. Still vegan after seventeen years. That is, your basic jive talking, tofu eating, jazz listening, bike commuting, rock climbing historian who eats no animal products.

How I became a veggie: Backpacked with friends through Europe who craved McD's in every city; by the end of the trip, I was eating elsewhere. Then moved in with a friend who was vegan. Seemed like eating animals no longer was viable or ethical. Over time, I keep finding more reasons to be vegan but my most basic reason still is my attempt to live compassionately in this world, on this planet.

It's sugar cane. I was visiting a small village in northern Tanzania; I lived the first half of '07 in Dar es Salaam.
