How cold is to cold?

I have always had indoor dogs so I was wondering how cold does it have to get before you bring your dogs inside or do you? I was at the bar earlier tonight and some guy left his dog in the car and the temp was in the mid 30's. I told him he had to take the dog home or I was calling the cops. Just wondering if I did the right thing?

You did the right thing.
Typically, they say when it gets below zero or the wind is bad. Your supposed to put them in a shelter or bring them in.

I have a yellow lab mixed dog and she's a little runt and lately she's just been staying outside all evening, for hours. She lets us know when she wants to come in by jumping on the door. She doesn't have a thick coat, but she seems to be alright. She's kind of a dumdum weirdo, so who knows.

But,yeah, that was cool to speak up for the dog like that. I probably would've done the same, except for cop-calling.

Yes, depends on the breed and tolerance of the dog. We had outdoor dogs growing up, they had their houses (never chained). We lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where it frequently gets below zero. On really cold nights, my dad would put them in the workshop where he had a woodstove. The breeds were a lab mix (long-haired) and a husky mix. Our dog now is not cold tolerant. I am more careful with him. Our pup spends a lot of the time in the car running errands. He just sleeps when we leave him for longer periods. He absolutely loves going with us and is bummed when it is too warm. I would not leave him without a thick blanket if it were in the 30's. I would also not leave him long in that temp.

I think the better question is what the hell was he doing with a dog in the car while at the bar? I can understand running into the store to quickly grab something but really, you had to stop and have a drink before going home?…but I digress. I am pretty sure it depends on the dog. Obviously young, bigger dogs with full coats deal better with the cold. Growing up my family only had inside dogs.

Depends on the breed and the time of day. I leave my dogs outside for a while when it's around freezing if the sun's out. My Pyrenees has a huge coat and is fine whereas my Catahoula has shorter hair and she's bothered easier by lower temperatures. If you're talking about leaving your own dogs out, you can get them sweaters. they have some pretty heavy ones. I've also left my dogs out in the snow and they scratch at the snow when they want in. Fur goes a long way in the cold.
