White Mountain Vegetarian Tamales
|
Product Type: Food and DrinkOne of the things I miss the most since giving up meat is tamales. My abuela (grandma) made amazing tamales and they were always a treat for me. I thought I would never get to have a good tamale again. Although I had heard of vegetarian tamales, they usually replaced the pork with beans and that just didn't seem to really make it a tamale - at least to me =) A few weeks ago we were shopping in our local natural food stores and looking through the frozen section. I saw the tamales through the glass, opened the door and grabbed a package, then I think I literally bounced over to my husband to show him! We read through the list of ingredients and were pleased to find that they were vegan! So we got 'em and planned out our meal for that night. Another plus, they weren't very expensive for a package of 6. You can microwave or steam these, microwaving taking a lot less time. So, we opted for that. We were worried that they may taste odd if we microwaved them, but went for it anyway. Hubby made some vegan spanish rice and some corn and we had our dinner. These tamales were amazing! They tasted just as yummy as others I've had (but nothing compares to my abuela's!). They were moist and flavorful and went well with the homemade salsa hubby made. We plan on trying to steam them soon to see if that makes them even better =) They have two other flavors - Sweet Potato-Pecan and Chipotle-Mushroom. We haven't found these at the local place yet, so we're going to ask for them to special order some. Overall, these were a great find...especially for a mexican girl who misses her tamales!
