Its not...well i guess if
Its not...well i guess if you live in the woods. then maybe.
it is possible.. and
it is possible.. and downright EASY, just depending on where you are. here in the caribbean, i do not have a car, do not go to walmart, and god knows, do not use oil for heating or hot water. we have a garden of fruit tees on our roof that keeps us from getting too hot (shade) and with the ocean 1 block away with it's beautiful breezes, no real reason for air conditioning.
we have fresh soil from the rainforest, and grow most of our own food. even the non-vegan people do not have hormones and pesticides in the fish they caught that morning!
and we just got those awesome new backpacks with the flexi-plastic solar front, so i can charge my laptop and phone from it. now, the only problem in our lives is how to power the damn fridge. anyone know that much about setting up solar panels?
"we have a garden of fruit
"we have a garden of fruit tees on our roof that keeps us from getting too hot"
do you have a picture of that??? Sounds very interesting ;)
I'm moving to where you
I'm moving to where you are!!!!!
Nope no way, you can just
Nope no way, you can just live a more compassionate life =]
Realistically and
Realistically and technically it might NOT be possible to call oneself 100% vegan in a non-vegan world. However, I feel that if we consciously choose NOT to consume animal products by NOT eating meat, poultry fish, dairy, or eggs, not eat honey, and not wear leather or fur products, than it is perfectly okay to call oneself "vegan". We are consciously and kindly avoiding forms of domination over animals but respect in its place; NOT contribiuting to animal cruelty and certian death to these animals by using compassion and love for our non-human friends. We are giving them homes and caring for them who would otherwise be in shelters or euthanized in the cruelest of ways. I for one consider myself vegan even though I might have to swallow a pill surrounded with gelatin capsules from time to time. I say we just do the best we can in a non-vegan world.
im not sure how to answer
im not sure how to answer this....
i mean i call myself vegan
but i own a car and bike..
and well i breath so im sure ive inhaled a bug or two and wait i walk a lot so i bet ive stepped on an ant
this is a bit extreme really imo
Yeah, it's a pretty extreme
Yeah, it's a pretty extreme poll. I'm not making people question their veganism. There's not right or wrong answer for it. I've been questioning it for a while and was wondering if it were possible.
You are either vegan or you
You are either vegan or you are not. It cannot be quantified in increments. What you mean is "is it possible to live without ever causing the death or exploitation of a single animal".
use less everything!
Hmm. So that makes me
Hmm. So that makes me wonder. If veganism is about not killing or exploiting animals that is different than not using any animal products.. So that would be like saying a vegan could eat the carcass of an animal that dies naturally. Or wild eggs that have been abandoned. If it's about not using animals for anything one could say that vegans can not use manure for growing plants. And what about the bugs in the soil. They aerate the dirt and provide nutrients. And the bees pollinate. Are people exploiting them and using their hard work for personal gain? That's why I believe in an ecosystem where everything is codependent on one another. Also I have heard that veganism is about compassion and kindness towards others. I have some hatred issues. I can honestly say that if the world goes down and all these wasteful lazy retards are coming to me to do all their dirty work I can't say I won't be shootin a bitch. So even if I did stop eating eggs (which I only eat from my chickens) and stopped using my honey face was (because we have switched to Agave cause it is is way better) I still don't think I would ever call myself vegan.
Save a chicken:)
I phrased the question based
I phrased the question based on my interpretation of the first choice, which indicates that somebody has to live in the wilderness and never drive etc in order to be "100%" vegan. Smiles provided the definition of veganism as I understand it. It is not possible to live in our world without using a product which has or will harm an animal. Even if you live in a tree, you will be taking up space which could be occupied by a non-human animal so then you would not be 100% vegan.
Since the idea that anybody can exist without causing at least some harm is fallacious, it therefore does not relate to a question of a vegan percentage. A vegan does their best to avoid all animal products when alternatives are available all the time. A non-vegan does not.
use less everything!
But as members of this
But as members of this planet don't we have a right to live here just as much as the animals and plants? We were born here and we will die here (except for those astronauts that don't make it back) and we are a part of the ecosystem. Unfortunately some folks think we need it all and that's not cool.
Save a chicken:)
It's a good thing you made
It's a good thing you made an exception for those astronauts, cuz I was about to jump in there and say, HEY - what about those astronauts?!? lol ;)
haha... i know... that was
haha... i know... that was great. when i first read her comment, i did a double-take and said, "wow! she even thought about the astronauts!" ;P
yeah I get you and I agree.
yeah I get you and I agree. That's why I don't think somebody is "more" or "less" vegan than any other vegan depending on where they live or whether or not they drive a car.
use less everything!
The most commonly accepted
The most commonly accepted definition of veganism -
"[T]he word "veganism" denotes a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude — as far as is possible and practical — all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegan
The main idea being "as far as is possible and practical". It would be pretty impossible at the moment, or any time in the forseeable future, to be "100% vegan" if one includes the natural pollination by bees or the use of animal by-products in tires, glue/adhesive, porcelain, etc. and the unfortunate demise of bugs when tilling soil. If you don't consume meat, eggs, dairy, or honey... don't wear or use leather, fur, wool, or silk... don't use products tested on animals or that contain animal ingredients... and do your best to support those companies that don't contribute to or participate in animal experimentation, use, and abuse... then there's no reason you shouldn't consider yourself vegan if you want to use that label for yourself.
As far as your hatred issues, well... you just need to find your inner peace, molly! ;P
That's what I said. I've
That's what I said. I've tried and tried. and I always run into some kind of funk. I don't think that I'll ever call myself a vegan because I don't want to be a hypocrite. I'll stick to my strict vegetarian status, it's almost vegan but not quite!
NOTE: "I'm not calling vegans hypocrites."
Exactly. Now I don't want
Exactly. Now I don't want anyone getting their britches in a bunch. I am very hard on myself and think all the people I have met here are fantastic. I would never say they are hypocrites. I just don't know what veganism means to me.
Save a chicken:)
i wish i could hit the first
i wish i could hit the first answer! but the truth is whatever you eat, some bugs got killed in the process at the very least...yes, driving slaughters millions of bugs and worse :(( and even walking kills ants and other bugs...there are probably animal products in the glue of the computers we're all sitting at. hate to say it, wish it wasn't so...
Hmmmm does this mean Rangi
Hmmmm does this mean Rangi is the only true vegan here?
