I read somewhere (like a textbook, not like USA Today or something) when I was in school that email/online petitions are a way for people to sit at home and act like they're "fixing" the problem . . . by putting their name in an online form. 90% of them don't actually do anything, they rarely even go to the individual or group to whom they're targeted, and if it's for a "real" purpose (get something on a ballot) it would be too difficult to verify all this information anyway.

Yeah... slacktivism.
Some thoughts from snopes...

Getting the knowledge out is good, I just wish there were additional things listed on these petitions letting people know what *else* they could do. =)
YES! Thank you, I couldn't
YES! Thank you, I couldn't remember the term! (or that there even WAS a term - it's been too long since I took that class).

Aw! What did I do wrong?! I just repost on myspace and here the ones that come across me from HSUS. Mostly for my friends who see a petition as a way to help while still being lazy carnivores. If they're pointless then it doesn't really hurt anything and if they work then well... Yay right?

I totally agree, at the very least they're a way to get info out there..

aaaaaw... you didn't do anything wrong, veggiegirl. =) i've just seen a few people posting petition bulletins lately and have been wanting to see peoples' thoughts on this here. even if the petitions themselves don't actually accomplish anything, it's always good to spread the information to get people thinking.
Just checking...

It seems like online petitions aren't taken very seriously, maybe because they could so easily be falsified.. I mean falsiFIDE..
