Is the chatroom the downfall of Vegifide as we know it?

No, I think the chatroom is essential. 57% (20 votes) No, I don't like to chat but I'm glad it's there. 9% (3 votes) Possibly 17% (6 votes) Yes, the chatroom just creates drama. 17% (6 votes) Total votes: 35 Tue, 07/08/2008 - 3:25pm — Eddie

I honestly believe that chat
I honestly believe that chat is a great idea. I come home from a stressful environment every night. I come to chat and speak with like minded people. When I'm up till one or two in the morning, and go to bed, I feel that I have a great nights sleep because I can talk to people who caring and friendly. They help me wined down at the end of the night. Its a shoulder everyone can lean on. If someone is having a bad day, they go to chat and we all get together and talk, we laugh, we learn.
I'm adding my tuppence worth
I'm adding my tuppence worth here too.
The chat room,has given me nothing but joy.I have connected with so many,wonderful,funny,spirited people,who I will say,have been more friends to me,than i've ever known.
We can be funny,serious,light hearted,etc,etc,we are all getting on though,no matter what.
I personally use it,to say hi to friends,new or aquanited,to get to know them etc,etc,but i'm generally light in there,as I feel personally,that if people want to delve deeper,they will do.
We are all different & in being so,learn so much from each other that way.I love how diverse we all are!
For instance,on MySpace,I post all kinds of bulletins,as I have 140 people,of all tastes,race,religions,etc,etc.My topics can be full on,about religion,the New World Order,David Icke,Bill Hicks,etc,etc,or funny,light hearted ones.
Vegan Pixie,for example,is a good,good friend to me on MySpace,she loves the funnies,but the harder,serious topics aren't for her really.But she doesn't attack me for it?She just passes them by.As I do,to my other friends,who post topics about god etc,as it's not for me.It doesn't make me like them less?
Tolerance of others.
I nearly left this site, and
I nearly left this site, and if it wasnt for the chatroom i think i would have.
So i think it makes the site imo as i think its easier to get to know others in that way :)
I think there needs to be a bit of tolerance on this site of each other. Im getting really frustrated that people are moaning that some jokes that start in the chatroom sometimes appear on the boards out here...i really dont understand why this would even be an issue???????????????????????????
I havent got a clue whats going on half the time, but i dont get the arse coz i dont 'get it'.
Can i also just say that some of the threads on the boards out here bore the tits off me, but i really wouldnt make it an issue. would be very controling of me if i did.
live and let live :)
Also this is just a suggestion....maybe we should have a chatroom with different rooms, so the people that have a sense of humour can go in one, and the others can go in the other one :D

PS its ashame the other thread got deleted.

different chat rooms would/could be a good idea, VP, if they can figure that one out. i'd vote for it. =)

disagreeing with the different chat rooms! It would separate people! no need!
People just need to lighten up thats all!

I just thought it was good compromise, then everyone would be happy.
Not everyone likes talking crap lmao!...i think that has been made quite clear recently lol.
We'll just go private
We'll just go private pix,it's what Lewis & I did last night!It was good!We opened up,shared deep stuff & no-one knew!!!!

Ok "Mr Hippy Guy" Eddie!
Ok "Mr Hippy Guy" Eddie! Hippy's are supposed to be funny loving people! You just seem to want to cause shit!
The chat is fun, i didn't know any vegans before i joined this site and if chat wouldn't of existed then i wouldn't have logged on as much and wouldn't have met new people and wouldn't have turned vegan! Chat is sometimes a bit of fun, and other times we can debate on it, getting an answer straight away, we can also ask for advise on it.
Also The Circumcision Thing was just a joke, maybe "us brits" Carried it on a bit, but it made me laugh, and i'm sure that it made other people laugh!
So in short! I LOVE CHAT AND ITS NOT BRINGING THIS SITE DOWN, ITS MAKING IT BETTER!!!!!!!
So yeah Eddie.... Lighten Up! :)

I've passed through the chat
I've passed through the chat room a couple times and it's been a bit obscene here and there. I realize that that isn't always the case, but when it is, it strikes me as somewhat problematic, even though I know it's done playfully for the most part, and without any intent to harm or offend. Hopefully all of us realize that what we do online is not necessarily anonymous and can impact social and professional relationships and standing. But that's not the major issue, to me.
Instead, the issue is one of respect for our community, considering that how we go about things on the site right now will potentially be seen by many veg*ns and potential veg*ns in the future, as well as by those who wish to discredit us and sabotage our efforts. It seems to me that some of the inside jokes and whatnot from the chat room have spilled over into other areas of the site, like Sassafrass's poll on male circumcision. From my perspective, that's an important issue to discuss, and one I'd hope everyone here from all our varied backgrounds would feel comfortable weighing in on, whether from health professionals, academics, religious practitioners, or whoever has an idea or opinion to share. I see one aspect of the site as a tool for ethical refinement, thinking through challenging questions in community.
On the circumcision question, I would have hoped to hear from all the above mentioned groups, but as it stands, it’s doubtful that many people with more conservative views will feel comfortable with the poll and may even see that as an indication of the tone across the site. This would be a great shame if people seeking good, solid information and community were put off by such things. I see such behavior as possibly counter-productive and short-sighted and think we should strive to be a respectable community with integrity and vision. (And no, I’m not saying everything has to be serious, by any means.) And while we clearly have big hearts here, compassion is not enough. We need wisdom. Peace ya’ll.
"...the issue is one of
"...the issue is one of respect for our community, considering that how we go about things on the site right now will potentially be seen by many veg*ns and potential veg*ns in the future, as well as by those who wish to discredit us and sabotage our efforts."
so, are you saying that because a small percentage of vegifide members make "off" remarks here-and-there in the sake of innocent fun, that these people are being disrespectful of the community? now if what they had said was racist, sexist, etc., i could completely understand. but over jokes about circumcision? c'mon now. you think that someone looking to "discredit" veg*ns is really going to come on here and try to use some of these funnies or immaturity to discredit veg*nism as a philosophy and way of life?!? "oh, the veg*ns are childish and immature. look how veg*ns can't even talk serious about the issue of cirumcision. don't go veg*n because you'll end up like "them"." honestly? or maybe i'm misinterpretting what you said.
"On the circumcision question, I would have hoped to hear from all the above mentioned groups, but as it stands, it’s doubtful that many people with more conservative views will feel comfortable with the poll and may even see that as an indication of the tone across the site. anyone looking around a website to see what it has to offer is going to look at more than just one or two features/areas of a site. at least i know *i* do. just like you wouldn't judge a book of poetry of collected works by how three or four of the poems affect you... i honestly don't believe that seeing something that's possibly a little offensive on one or two questions (or a question and a poll or even talk in the chat room) is going to scare someone away from joining a site that has so much more to offer. i don't think the "behavior" is counter-productive... it just goes to show that not all people take things seriously 100% of the time.
I think i over-emphasized
I think i over-emphasized the circumcision post and probably should have cut my comment down a bit b/c it does blow it out of proportion. Maybe I should have written my response and sat on it until today before editing and posting instead of just putting it out there right away. I just don't want to see us miss opportunities to be schooled by people in the know with valuable insights and perspectives because some raunchy joking on important topics pushed them away. But you're right, I did get too serious here. I'll chill now. Thanks for the thoughtful response.
If I cared enough about a
If I cared enough about a topic to school someone about it I wouldn't care what other people had said on the topic. If the whole thread was silly I would still answer seriously if I felt I had too because I would know that someone out there might appreciate my serious response.
If people are scared off a topic by some silly responses then I don't really think that's the silly people's fault entirely. If you want to say something, Just say it! You only have yourself to blame if you don't open your mouth (or type out your words).
Also we should be incredibly happy that our site has silliness and not hate talk on it like what Adam Antichrist is dealing with over on the MS forums.
I'll take some penis jokes over watching people tear eachother apart any day!!
I'm also glad we aren't totally dull like some of those on VeganPeople. What makes this site great is that it isn't just a place for information. It isn't a place where veg*ns only discuss what they ate that day or tofu recipes. Vegifide has become a true community of people who can express themselves as they are. On Vegifide we aren't just Veg*ns we are regular people who also happen to be Veg*ns.
Maybe this isn't what you and Mike had in mind when you first created this site but you should both be damn proud of what you've got here. This site has brought a lot of people together that wouldn't have met otherwise. This site has allowed Veg*ns to form friendships with other Veg*ns when they thought they were all alone in their city.
And who knew St. Louis would become such a veggie hub? lol
Love you guys! Keep up the good work!

Nice pun!
I could live with or without the chat room, but I think it's a great feature of this site.
just a thought as to the
just a thought as to the community as a whole (regardless of the situation or topic being discussed or poked fun at), i honestly don't think that knowledgeable, informed people would hesitate to contribute and pass on their insights/experience/perspective simply based on a few things they might see here-and-there with which they don't agree or find distasteful. i would *hope* that would be the case, anyway. just my opinion.
I actually thought that even
I actually thought that even among all the light-heartedness in the Circ. comments, there were still a lot of genuine opinions that got out there, along with a smattering of facts. The only problem was keeping track of all the new comments, lol. I'm glad I spurred that much action on this site, hehe.

I totally agree.Fats was honest,so was Lewis,but we had a laugh too?
We just don't take life as serious as some,that's not right or wrong,it's just the way we are.We enjoy having a bloody good laugh.
I thank you,for posting it,as it certainly was enjoyed by alot of us!We all enjoyed contributing,& a heck of alot enjoyed reading it.
My aim,was to make people laugh when they took a look,including Fatsaints,as we always have a laugh together!And it worked!
So again,thank you,so much!

You're most welcome, dear Free. I enjoyed it as much as you did ;)) I'm glad we all got to laugh and let loose a bit!!!
I see what you're getting at
I see what you're getting at but also I think that it shows that we are just normal people that happen to be veg*n as well instead of some of those uppity, stuffy people that take everything far too seriously. I think THAT is a huge way to disuade people from wanting to look at anything on the site for fear that it's going to once again imply that they are not good enough because they *gasp* eat meat. I don't know about you but my whole family eats meat and I won't be looking down on them anytime soon, but thats another rant entirely so I'll stick to the subject. The point is that we want more people to come to our side. Somebody is ALWAYS going to be offended by something... So I'm going to continue to be myself and I don't think thats anything I need to censor.
Sorry if i came off "uppity"
Sorry if i came off "uppity" and "stuffy". =) Wasn't my intention. Peace, Kels.

I can see your point,but we also need sense of humours,a laugh & to lighten up too.
There is so much serious talk here,we all need the balance.
Some prefer to come on here,on the chat room,to have a laugh,I certainly do.So do many others.
The circumcision discussion,was both funny AND serious.
Both points got across.We mucked about with Fatsaints,as we are all good friends to him,would never hurt him.If people took offense to that,so they did.
It is the age to be offended,unfortunately.
Lets all lighten up shall we?
Laugh more.

In the age of offending what's worth defending? And you're right about the need for laughter and balance. Easy to forget sometimes. Respect.

"In the age of offending
"In the age of offending what's worth defending?" <-- great quotable.
I have noticed that there is
I have noticed that there is less discussion in the blogs and Q&A's since the chat became popular, and almost no discussion in the forums any more. But this might be coincidence. I will say that if it weren't for a significant time difference between me and most of the chat users, I'd be in there every day! I think it is awesome to have a vegie only chat, something I longed for on other veg communities I have been involved with.
The problem for me is, you guys are all on it when for me it is the middle of the afternoon and by the time I get on it you are all in bed or getting up to go to work etc.
use less everything!

I'm just thinking we've run out of questions to ask! It takes time for people to think up ones that haven't already been posted! And even then they usually are recycled questions from a few months ago that people didn't realize had been asked :)
I agree with ya, Sass. It
I agree with ya, Sass. It seemed in the beginning there was that sense of "OOO! I finally have other veggies to talk to!" and all the topics that we'd previously not had a community like this with which to discuss rolled out. Things may have slowed down some. But not only is this a growing, changing community, there is NO lack of craziness going on in the world that will spark discussion in the future.
Eddie, to be honest I think
Eddie, to be honest I think you have created more drama on Vegifide than the chat function. I'm not trying to be rude, but I firmly believe this.

I think the potential for
I think the potential for drama exists far more on the forums or Q&A section of the site than on the chatter. If there's a discussion and there's a misunderstanding of someone's meaning, it can be immediately rectified or talked out. On the other hand, in the other two sections I mentioned, if someone has posted an "offensive" reply to the post of someone else, by the time the person who posted this reply looks back to see that they (most likely unintentionally) caused a drama, it's likely to have been blown to a whole new level . . . as well as have three other people involved in the first place.
And I like that I have gotten to known people a lot more than what their posts in other parts of the site reflect. While we are all veg*n, that's only one aspect of our lives. There were actually people I was kinda like "ehh. . . I dunno" about before I encountered them in the chat and found out they they're actually really cool. i like knowing the chat room
i like knowing the chat room is there even though i've never used it. if i am up late at night, which seems to be the most popular time to chat, i am usually in a recovery chat room. HOWEVER, i like knowing you are all there if i want to laugh or need an ear......
Haha... I was going to say
Haha... I was going to say what Pax said. I've gotten to know people a lot better and why they answer the way the do after talking to them in chat. If anything, I think MORE people should join the chatroom! It's usually more active after 8pm (central US time). So, if you have any questions or are upset with something you read, you can just hop in there and try to understand their point of view. There's MUCH more talk in there than just things that might seem immature or offensive. Some of the time. :P
A few things I've talked about recently in chat...
* vegan cheeses
* the construction of mollymormon's outdoor shower
* gun control
* computer issues
* problems with the furries in our lives
* road trips and vacations
* veg-friendly restaurants or offerings at local restaurants
* gardening
* composting
* parenting issues
* childhood fears and experiences
* health problems
* legal issues
I wouldn't say it's *essential* (that people would stop using the site if it wasn't here), but I don't feel it should be removed from the site any more than any other feature of the site.
Yes sure I'm known for
Yes sure I'm known for turning the chat into a giant flirt session with the help of a few others. But I've also met a lot of people in chat who have actually become some of my closest friends in real life. Thanks to our connection we had in the chat room we either see each other or call each other regularly. That's awesome!
To add to what smiles said there have been religious debates, recipe sharing, talks about relationship issues, and discussions on upcoming meetups.

I suppose everyone will start arguing about the chatroom now.....im loosing the will to live.
Why is everything a debate on here?! lol
Im not sure why any one
Im not sure why any one would think the chat room creates drama? If anything it helps to dispel the drama. Because people can connect in real time and really understand an others point of view.
Why would it create any more drama than any other tool here on vegifide? There is drama on the questions, drama in the blogs. Its just part of having close to a thousand people in one space. Such is life.
Getting rid of chat would create more drama I feel.
