Vegan Navajo Frybread

So my team at work, was doing a "potluck" sort of meal, and they asked me to do frybread(a rather popular southwest American tribal dish that my tribe invented). So I was like okay... and through a little hit or miss came up with a vegan alternative to a recipe thats been past down in my family.

WARNING: this is a deep frying recipe, which mean ventilation is neccessary if your doing it inside your house. it can get kinda "steamy"

INGREDIENTS:
3 cups unbleached all purpose flour
2 teaspoons Baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 Teaspoon unbleached sugar (I used sugar in the raw which worked well)
1 Tablespoon nonsticking agent (veggie oil, olive oil, earth balance, etc)
¾ cup warm "milk"

DIRECTIONS:
Start by combining all the dry ingredients together, then slowly add the non sticking agent into the mix. once its began to bind pour in the "milk" (I used soy milk and had to add a tiny bit of water to give it the right consistency). once mixed the dough should only be pliable enough to knead.

On a floured board next you are going to knead the dough. The process might take a bit, but continue going until you have achieved a soft and elastic feeling bread.

once kneaded tear off small bits(about the size of a bun) and form them into small balls (you should get about six out of the original ingredient list). now let them set for 45 minutes so the ingredients can meld.

coming back to your little balls of doughy goodness, you are going to flatten them out on your flour covered board. they should flatten out to about five or six inches in diameter.

once your flat dough is ready, your going to grab a large frying skillet and fill it about three or four inches with oil.

Once the pan is going good and hot you are going to put each fry bread in individually. they are going to rise to the top of the oil almost instantly. It should only take a minute for them to get all dark and golden (don't fret on charring its part of the process and doesn't hurt the taste or texture)

FIN.

btw for those wondering, frybread is a sweater style flatbread, and is excellent, with a jam. They go good for snacking, or a wonderful breakfast food.

Enjoy.
