ok i just recently went vegetarian. it took me months to kick my meat habit! but i did, unfortunatly i have replaced it with cheesey items.......cheese pizza, macoroni and cheese, ect....
ive looked at the grocery store ( i live in in a tiny town ) and they have soy slices and veggie slices but it says it has some dairy in them. they dont seem to have any totally vegan cheeses.
im finding it harder to kick my dairy habit then it was to kick the meat!
i have replaced as many items as i can find though. i have dream brand rice and soy milk and i have vegan butter, even dairy free ice cream.
its mainly the cheese i am havign the problem with. so what are some vegan cheese brands that i can look for?
and are they any good?
thanks to all that answer! :)

A:I agree about cheese. It is disgusting and wonderful!
I second avocados and hummus. Maybe not together.
This isn't a shot at anybody...but really, just learn to do without. If that is what you really want. Take pleasure in doing without and in doing what you feel is right. I still have cravings for cheese but can't bring myself to eat it.
I also learned to simply love tofu. And even if it has a reputation as a meat substitute it really is more properly a soy cheese like stuff because it is made from soymilk. ;-)

A:I used to love cheese too. Really all you can do is just stop eating it and suffer through the withdrawls. Not that I havn't eaten it in a while the idea of cheese seems disgusting. Now when I see it all I see is a bunch of fat and grease and I remember how I usually felt after I ate it which was mostly a bad feeling. I very rarely use fake cheese. It's just not the same and isn't very good. Why would I want to eat something that isn't very good just because it sort of reminds me of a food I used to be addicted to.
Since I stopped eating cheese I have a new appreciation for other foods, like avocadoes....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
And if I'm craving a cheezy tasting snack I make what has been dubbed "super awesome toast" just get some bread (I actually like to use Ezikiel bread for this even though I'm not a fan of it usually) Then spread butter (or vegan alternative like earth balance mmmmm)on it. Then sprinkle some garlic powder (or fresh garlic) over it. Put it in the oven on 450 until its almost toasty. Then sprinkle some nutritional yeast over it and let it finish baking. When the bread gets to your desired toastyness remove from oven, enjoy and then send me a letter thanking me.
Also try mikojaks avocado on toast. mmmmmmmm

A:before i went vegan i was obsessed with cheese as well. there are some good alternatives. Follow Your Heart is my favorite because it actually melts. but now knowing exactly what cheese is...and everything that's in it. gross. i would never go back to it. and especially since eating dairy supports the veal industry.
"Cheese is made by coagulating milk to give curds which are then separated from the liquid, whey, after which they can be processed and matured to produce a wide variety of cheeses. Milk is coagulated by the addition of rennet. The active ingredient of rennet is the enzyme, chymosin (also known as rennin). The usual source of rennet is the stomach of slaughtered newly-born calves."
If you still feel the need to eat cheese after reading that, then you have a serious addiction and need help.

A:I have been unsuccessful at weaning my hubby from cheese. The soy stuff just does not cut it for him. I make a cheesy sauce (from The New Farm cookbook)from nutritional yeast that he loves and that is the best that I can do. Replace the need for cheese with spices perhaps. Good Luck.

A:I'm phasing out cheese myself. I was using it as a convenient snack when I get home after working long hours or such. I've been replacing it with veggie burgers and refried beans with hot sauce in a soft tortilla. I also been microwaving up some frozen vegetables as well. La Preferida actually makes a vegetarian refried beans that are vegan.

A:I've yet to meet a commercial product that is not cheese but is purporting to be cheese-like that is anything short of nasty.
By all means, try that not-cheese recipe book... and tell us about it...
I'll try it too.

A:That's my big thing too...I tried using the emotional angel; I watched Meet your Meat years ago and I stopped eating cheese for a long time; but when I got pregnant I just "had" to eat cheese and cheese and cheese...now I'm hooked again. ) =

A:I have to say i have tried several fake cheeses and NOTHING will ever compare to dairy cheese. why? because theres so many additives in cheese that in make its addicting. Its not the taste we crave, its just made to be addicting. They did a study once on a bunch of people going veg, they said the hardest thing to give up was cheese and it was what they missed the most.

A:You're not the only one Phactorri! I had no problem giving up cheese. I saw Earthlings once and could never eat the stuff again . . . it just looked like death and suffering to me.
That would be my advice - go for the emotional. Watch Earthlings, read literature etc. on the dairy industry. As soon as I discovered the truth, I had no desire for it ever again.
Also, if you would never eat veal, then don't eat cheese. The two industries are directly related. Once a cow has a baby, the females are made into more dairy cows and the males are crated up for veal.

A:Decide if what you want is really cheese, sometimes our bodies tell us we want something when we don't need it. If you need a cheese fix, then substitute something else for it, such as avocados or cashews.

A:think about why you don't want to eat cheese, when you want it. granted I feel like I'm the only vegan ever who had no issues giving up cheese.
as to brands I don't eat a lot of it, but I liked "vegan Gourmet" okay, only decent one but keep in mind I didn't like cheese as an omni. other brands include "vegan", "soy caas" and "teese vegan cheese". there's probably other ones about...

A:It's taken me 13 years since going vegetarian to quit cheese, but I finally have. It's taken a combination of things for me. First, I'm finally at the point where cheese makes me ill the way meat did when I became vegetarian. The thought of the cows being pumped for their milk, knowing it supports the veal industry, knowing how unnatural it is to consume something designed for another species, knowing much of it is pus, knowing it often contains antibiotics, knowing it's supporting everything I hate, knowing I was a hypocrite all these years and doing it anyway...AND talking to other vegans (THANKS, Vegifide)!! Those are the things that got me to quit. I was already reading labels all the time, almost never bought cheese at the store, mostly only did so when eating out, so I just needed to do it. It hasn't been hard once I turned the switch. I think eating out socially is the most difficult, but if you have to join people at a non-veg friendly restaurant, just make sure you eat lots before-hand so you don't feel bad when everyone else gets to eat!!!
Edit: To actually answer your question about the vegan cheese alternatives :) - my favorite is Follow Your Heart's Vegan Gourmet in the cheddar variety.

A:OK. 4 easy "whatever you do, don't do this way" steps.
1) Start Smoking
2) Become Addicted to Smoking
3) Smoke for 20 years
4) Quit smoking.
I speak from experience, once you've quit smoking, you can quit ANYTHING!
(ok this is in jest. I'm not actually advising one to become a smoker by any means, just having fun!)
