R.I.P Fred

Fred was a calf that was 'owned' by my partner's parents. Their friend 'gave' him to them because he wasn’t very strong and more than likely would die. They took him because if they could get him to live, they could eat him :(
They nurtured him and care for him. There were many times when it was touch and go, but he was a fighter and survived.
He was so sweet and friendly and enjoyed others company. We formed a connection, and whenever I was there he would run up to see me, which he didn’t do for others ( maybe because i am a fellow herbivore!)
I asked my partner's parents how they could possibly eat him after they had fought so hard to keep him alive.
Their answer was typical;'it was what he was there for'.
Disgusted, I argued with them for months, but they decided at twelve months he would be slaughtered so they could eat him.
Last week, at ten months old, they found Fred dead in the paddock. His digestive system wasn’t working and when the green grass sprouted after the rain, his digestive system couldn’t cope.
Rest in peace Fred. Ill miss you and will always be thankful, that unlike so many other animals, you didn’t have to suffer the indignity of being killed for your flesh.
