Does bad driving reflect poorly on vegans? =-)

Seriously.

I know that some judge people poorly who have the Christian fish on their car when these people drive bad or cut people off.

Today, I had a vegan cut me off!!! And in my head I thought, "Dude, I'm vegan." I know this is ridiculous.

And yet I wonder in a much more general way, does being rude, impatient, or just plain mean reflect to others that being vegan is simply a selfish choice that isn't founded on compassion?

Yes..and no. Yes because people love stereotyping. No because any smart person is not gonna judge a whole group of people based on one persons actions.

To judge someone like that sounds silly. To take the actions of one person and apply them to all other people isn't fair way to judge any people or situation.

I read this post again and decided that I have been vegan long enough to answer exactly how I feel.

Veganism means something different to everyone, so no one has the right to define it for us. I take offense by other vegans thinking they have the right to constitute what makes someone a vegan. If I kill others, run people off the road, lie, cheat or steal, what would you call me if I ate no animals? There are just as few animals on my menu as there are other on other vegans’ menus, so what exactly is veganism – a fraternity or a cult?
Personally, I’d appreciate it if other vegans wouldn’t be concerned about how I live my life, or if I’m zen, kind or gentle. I am enraged by animal cruelty, where some vegans might feel the correct approach is to be more passive and loving.

So, to answer your question, no, your driving does not affect other vegans, like myself. If you pass a truck on the way to slaughter, I give you full support if you decide you want to flip off the driver.

And another thing – if a person lives in an area of the world where vegan clothing and accessories are not available, that person is STILL a vegan if they don’t eat animals. Everyone’s intention is improvement. If alternatives become more widely available, improvement will follow suit.

It only does if they have one of those stickers because then your mind will automatically connect the two.

Yes, mikojak, bumper sticker.

"Go vegan for life"

And adam, I agree. We should add "good driver" to the definition of vegan. =-)

And, yes, I agree people shouldn't judge groups of people by one individual. But, don't they? And, yes it is silly.

=-)

I think this is a serious question that we need to consider.

It would seem to me that because there are so few of us, each of us may be the only vegan encounter many people have, so it's important to make a good impression, and to fit in with mainstream america as much as possible. That means have a job, buy a house, don't cover yourself in tattoos or be an inconsiderate driver (if you have a veg bumper sticker), or do anything else that will reinforce most of the country's opinion that veganism is for hostile outcasts or is just another way for certain people to distance themselves from society.

Our ultimate goal is a vegan world, and in order to that we must spread veganism. We can't do that if other people don't feel they can relate to us. Veganism is for everyone and everyone is a potential vegan. Any time you're any place with non-vegans and people know that you're vegan, your appearance, your attitude, body language, words all speak for the animals, so don't be a weirdo. Save that for the vegan potlucks and earth crisis concerts. :)

This question makes me laugh, not in a mean way... but people are people. My experiences with fellow vegetarians/vegans have been good. Maybe we should all put vegan stickers on our vehicles! :) Kind of like law enforcement officials who don't pull each other over. I remember I was in a van and the driver was a sheriff. We drove all the way to FL from NC speeding. In the back he had a bag that said "SHERIFF" in large letters - visible from the outside of the van. The sheriff accelerated past us and waved. Well, anyway...

it was probably one of those "vegans" that eats fish
or the car was stolen

In any case, good driving is a prerequisite for veganism and bad drivers need not apply

I would have to say that anyone who judges a group of individuals (vegans) by one persons aggro driving style...well thats just plain silliness. haha

It would be like saying all Christians are insane drivers because someone with an I love Jesus sticker cut me off. Although christians are a vastly larger group of people than vegans are, of course.
